Why do bad things happen to good people? That only happened once, and He volunteered.

First, a disclaimer: This quote is not saying that all suffering is brought upon by the victim him/herself. It is not trivialising suffering nor evil. As many have noted, it is not meant to answer the question, but to test presuppositions and our underlying assumptions about justice and ‘deservedness’.

Second, that the quote is so instinctively repulsive – to me, at least, at first glance – is probably a sign that it needs to simmer in my heart for much, much longer. Thank God Christ’s righteousness is credited to all who put their trust in Him.
